An Unexpected Night With PEACHES

When was the last time you saw a performer hold an entire crowd in the palm of her hand with that level of raw energy?

Peaches are sweet. PEACHES is shocking. The Canadian electro-clash icon best known for Teaches of Peaches remains one of the most uncompromising performers on the planet. I can’t remember the last time I saw an artist so confident in her message, so raw in her presentation, and so genuinely inspiring to young and old alike, all while being unapologetically raunchy. Her show is sex-positive, inclusive, political, funny, and relentlessly high-energy. Yet for all its political weight, it never feels preachy.

At first, the minimal setup was deceiving. The stage crew spent a long time meticulously prepping a stark, empty space, with one crew member pacing across the expanse to pull up stray tape and set precise floor marks. When the show started, the bareness made me wonder if we were in for a stripped-back, lower-energy set. But that careful preparation soon revealed itself as the foundation for a stage production that rivals Broadway. Every moment was planned and choreographed, yet it never felt stale or mechanical.

When an artist hits the stage wearing a ghillie suit made of dicks, the night can go one of two ways: a cheap shock-value gimmick that quickly wears thin, or an unforgettable performance. Thankfully, it was the latter. While the raunch kept coming (complete with a hot pink merkin and hairy pasties), the inclusive ethos of the show perfectly matched the energy of World Pride Amsterdam. From leotards supporting trans rights to giant vagina costumes, Peaches never leaves you wondering where she stands on social issues. The crowd responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. Across generations, her message resonated, but most importantly, marginalized members of the audience felt truly seen. As a cis-white male, I try to remain conscious of stepping into spaces not centered around me, but sharing this experience with my friends and family made it clear how powerful her sanctuary really is.

The set changes were seamlessly handled by backup dancers and two “stagehands” who felt far more deeply involved than typical hired crew. Their dedication was dogged, inspired, and deeply invested in selling every single visual gag. Was the performance serious? No.... but also yes. It balanced absurd humor with moments of profound social commentary. It defied classification. It defied reason. It defied the status quo. And I loved every minute of it.

Having left the United States after feeling stifled and uncomfortable speaking my mind, where standing up for my beliefs felt like placing a target on myself and my family, This show was an incredible breath of fresh air. It re-energized my commitment to standing up for inclusive values.

It is rare to see an artist you first discovered decades ago in college still performing with this level of intensity. Seeing Peaches deliver a powerhouse, highly athletic 100-minute set complete with splits, crowd surfing, drag queens, and rapid costume changes isn’t just impressive, it is a masterclass.
